About this blog

Declaration of intent

This blog is written by a young South African who realises that global warming and environmental damage are issues that  require humankind’s immediate attention. He is no carbon emissions saint, but believes that world citizens have a duty to look after the planet we call home.

“More environmentalist, less consumer”

The purpose of this blog is to spread ideas and solutions to fight climate change, and to foster habits that will ensure that our children have pure air to breathe and clean rivers to swim in.

Feel free to contribute ideas. Avanti!

  1. Thanks for your comment on my blog. Here is some info as requested.

One organization that educates consumers on which programs measure up is the nonprofit Clean Air–Cool Planet (cleanair-coolplanet.org ). Last December, it released a comprehensive evaluation of offset providers (PDF), rating each on a scale of 1 to 10. Of 30 companies evaluated, only eight earned a 5 or higher.

    (In alphabetical Order)

    1. AgCert/Driving Green (Ireland)
    2. Atmosfair (Germany)
    3. Carbon Neutral Company (UK)
    4. Climate Care (UK)
    5. Climate Trust (US)
    6. CO2 Balance (UK)
    7. NativeEnergy (US)
    8. Sustainable Travel/MyClimate (US)

Meanwhile, the European watchdog group Gold Standard Foundation (cdmgoldstandard.org) certifies well-run, legitimate carbon-offsetting projects using a system that works much like the “fair trade” coffee and “100% organic” labels. “Beware of any old company claiming to be carbon-neutral,” says marketing director Jasmine Hyman. “It’s the wild, wild West.”

    Hope that helps.

  2. Hi Anja

Thanks a stack – I will investigate similar South African firms, but I am not getting my hopes up.

I’ll be blogging on SA carbon emissions as soon as I get off this deadline.

  3. I love your site. Keep it up !
